Once again, the realm gets into multiple battles with their enemies (Deepers now), and they sustain heavy damage before miraculously winning. Along the way, they acquire new tech and materials, but the plot remains monotonously the same. The writing is still sophomoric, as the authors seem oblivious to the presence of adverbs to modify verbs. They also attempt to use some big words to dress up the story; i.e. a “prehensile” membrane on an alien resembling a sugar glider. A quote from the Princess Bride applies here. “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means”. The realm now has tunable gates and can travel vast distances almost instantaneously. They keep building structures and ships, but the quest to find, and eliminate, the Deepers is starting to drag a bit. I hope the next installment moves things along better. Book 13 is almost nonstop action and its awesome! It's pretty cool seeing how all of the characters have evolved over the series, especially the AI's. I can't wait to see how the war with the Deeper's continues and the eventual conclusion.
